Clinical Observations Written Reflection
IPTS Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
My clinical observations took place as an online placement at Dvorak Elementary School in Chicago Illinois. I worked with the art teacher for grades K-8, Jennifer Grubczak. For going through school in a digital setting observations were quite different than expected. For the privacy of students I was not permitted to Zoom in to any of Ms. Grubczak's classes. However I was able to get some hands on experience. Ms. Grubczak's fifth graders had shown interest towards local Chicago artist, Hebru Brantley. To help guide a future lesson centered around the artist I conducted research and created a handout for the students.

Elementary School Unit Plan
This unit plan was geared towards students in a public, urban, elementary school. The focus is on discovering different approaches to creating abstract art. It will provide students with the opportunity to explore the properties of different mediums and materials, such as: watercolor, colored pencil, graphite, and photography. They will learn how abstract art is made and how they can get there themselves. They will also learn about a variety of abstract artists from different backgrounds, including: Wassily Kandinsky, Odili Donald Odita, Piet Mondrian, Georgia O’Keefe, and Albert Renger-Patzsch. This will reinforce the idea that not everyone has to approach art the same way and that there is no cookie cutter artist.

Artist Research
IPTS Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
To stay up to date with contemporary art and to find artist to help guide lessons we were tasked with researching an artist. I presented on Nicole Parish, a painter and content creator on TikTok. Parish is autistic and creates naturalistic oil paintings of insects, one of her special interests. Her work is an excellent example of working from a real life source and working from your own interests. Art can seem daunting but combing it with the students' interest can add another level of enjoyment. Parish also creates many videos on autism that would be great educational tools for students and teachers.

Professionalism, Advocacy, & Leadership: PAL 1
7G: understands the need for continuing study, self-evaluation, and professional growth.
We were instructed to go out and experience art to continue our engagement in the world of art. I visited the Caroline Kent exhibition at University Galleries. I found the largeness of Kent's canvases to be truly engaging. The soft and electric pastels sat beautifully in the vastness of the black background. The abstract pieces reminded me of Hilma af Klint's work with spirituality and the cosmos.

To gain experience in the art world I participated in a gallery show. Organized by a classmate in Art 201, a group of us exhibited our work at the Illinois Art Station. There was low stress and low stakes as it was organized by us and for us. It gave us an opportunity to see our art in a professional setting and create artist statements for a specific work and setting. The environment created was welcoming and accepting as many of us exhibited for the first time.
