I approach teaching the same way I approach making art, subject to change. With every class there will be different needs and expectations set by me and the students. Together we will develop a system that works best to further the class's educational and personal growth. Following the Universal Design for Learning I provide my students with a choice. Choice is present throughout all my lessons whether it be on how they want to receive material to how they express their knowledge while still reaching the desired goals. I take inspiration from the progressivist teaching philosophy that is student-centered, with the teacher as a guide and partner to the students as they continue to go on their educational journey. It is my job to help my students become critical thinkers as they come across new and exciting information.
It is also very important to create a welcoming and calm environment in the classroom. School should be a space that encourages exploration and creativity. This can be done when a teacher values the learning experiences of each student. Teachers should also care for the student's personal growth outside of an educational standpoint. Building a strong relationship with our students through love and acceptance helps them become confident, strong, kind, and independent people. This can be accomplished by getting to know our students’ culture and community. Participating in and supporting community events and businesses we become connected to our students, their families, and neighbors. This knowledge will allow you to incorporate your students' cultures into your lessons building their pride and appreciation for their own culture and cultures beyond their own.
